Is Lon Allan really as ignorant as he sounded in his Dec. 30 column (“California laid an egg with chicken law”)? If so, yikes!
I’m pretty sure science has learned a few things about raising chickens since the 1950s. It’s hard to imagine such a limited outlook regarding our food supply. Beyond the issues of humane treatment of food-supply farmed animals, there are very significant foodsafety aspects as to why you’d want chickens to have a little space to actually be and live like a chicken — run around, forage for food, stretch out a bit, flap their wings, etc.
To ignore these aspects may literally put your health or that of aloved one at risk. After all, you are what you eat!
