This Central Coast is my sanctuary where I often surf, swim, walk and love to breathe the fresh ocean air. Because I am thankful for my time spent at the seaside, I favor federally recognized sanctuary status for our coastline from the Channel Islands to the tip of San Luis Obispo County. As a college student looking forward to the future, I strongly believe intergenerational equality needs to be addressed, especially in environmental policy.
The unique history held along the coast needs to be preserved, and aside from treasuring the sacredness of the land, there are positive financial impacts to San Luis Obispo County with sanctuary designation.
The local economy would gain at least $23 million per year, and would create at least 600 new jobs with the proposed Central Coast National Marine Sanctuary. Sanctuary proximity also may increase property value and business, local and state revenue with the potential for increased coastal and ecological tourism.
A designated marine sanctuary can allow coastal habitats to thrive for generations to come while permanently preventing offshore oil and gas drilling. Please support the protection of wildlife populations along the coast and in the waters.
