There are no such things as “clean-green nuclear facilities,” as claimed in a recent letter (“Shut down fossil fuel,” Nov. 7).
Nuclear reactors produce high-level radioactive wastes that are lethal for up to one million years, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency. And Diablo Canyon produces about 70 metric tons of this radioactive waste each year.
There is still no answer to the question of how to keep these toxins isolated from living things for that million years. We need to shut down these sources of toxic pollution, starting with the only nuclear reactors operating in California — the ones in our backyard, surrounded by 13 earthquake faults and aptly named after the devil.
We can replace both fossil fuels and nuclear energy sources by a combination of decentralized, sustainable alternatives. For details on what California is already doing to increase sustainable sources, go to the California Energy Commission website and do a search for sustainable energy. We can choose truly clean and green sources!
