Letters to the Editor

Benefits worth cost

I have read a couple of recent letters to the editor expressing concern about the “high cost” of Measure D. One writer called it “a selfish attack on homeowners’ budgets.”

I support what Measure D is intended to do but thought maybe it was time to see just what the real cost of it would be for my family. Using the estimated rate of $49 per $100,000 of assessed property value (what our property taxes are based on), I calculated that the measure would cost my family approximately $184 per year on our home in San Luis Obispo, or just over $15 a month.

Considering all of the ways it will benefit the tens of thousands of students who will attend San Luis Coastal Unified School District high schools over the next couple of decades, Measure D sounds like a real bargain to me.
