Keep SLO great

I enthusiastically encourage San Luis Obispo voters to support Measure G, a renewal of Measure Y approved by voters in 2006 that has pumped more than $31 million into the local economy to maintain our city’s exceptional quality of life.

The half-cent sales tax increase has funded street repaving, sidewalk improvements, neighborhood traffic management, flood prevention, police and fire protection, and open-space acquisition — and the staff necessary to provide and maintain these services and improvements. These are locally controlled dollars — they cannot be seized by Sacramento or Washington, D.C.

One project near to my heart was the recent completion of the Bob Jones Trail connection to Los Osos Valley Road. This stretch will eventually be part of a spectacular greenbelt between San Luis Obispo and Avila Beach that will be enjoyed by generations of bicyclists and pedestrians. The Railroad Safety Trail and other bicycle and pedestrian projects have also benefited from the half-cent sales tax.

I was a member of the Local Revenue Measure Advisory Committee that recommended placing Measure G on the ballot so voters could decide whether to continue this important revenue source. I urge you to vote “yes” on Measure G to keep our city great.
