Thank you for publishing Miriam Gurba’s touching article about her experiences with her Uncle Henry (“What is danger? Insights from a schizophrenic uncle,” Sept. 4). Her story is not uncommon.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) states that 1 in 4 people will suffer from a diagnosable mental illness in their lifetime. One in 12 children are affected.
We have seen the tragic effects of untreated mental illness in our own community. Our local affiliate, NAMI SLOCO, offers a message of hope — that with proper treatment, people with mental illnesses can live full and pro ductive lives. Come and learn more at our Beautiful Minds Walk and Resource Fair on Oct. 4 at Laguna Lake Park in San Luis Obispo. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Help us raise awareness, stamp out the stigma of mental illness and spread the message of hope for friends, family and loved ones affected by mental illness
