The Tribune is to be commended for its editorial questioning the price of a gateway sign for Highway 1, (“Sign for SLO city gateway seems pricey,” Aug. 8). This is a fine example of a local newspaper serving as a watchdog on government. This sign was approved by SLO City Council, San Luis Obispo Council of Governments and the federal government grant, none of which saw fit to question why a single wall will cost as much as a house, which would include land, plumbing, electric, heating, plants, interior walls and decorating, kitchen cabinets and counters, bathroom fixtures, floors and a roof, plus builder’s profit.
To compound the folly of this project, I believe a better result could be accomplished with a banner like those hung over Higuera Street for special events.
