It is past time for local communities to get ready to reuse water. All waste disposal departments treat their sewer water to the point it can be released in the ocean without concern. In fact, San Luis Obispo releases its treated sewage water down the San Luis Obispo Creek into the ocean at Avila Beach where children play at the mouth of the creek without harmful effects. In Arroyo Grande, Oceano and Grover Beach, the water district should start building a pipeline from the sewer plant in Oceano to the water treatment plant reservoir at Lopez Drive and Orcutt Road.
These projects will be much less costly than desalination plants and ready much sooner. The pipelines could be built in a year or less, running them alongside or in current creeks.
