My heart goes out to the suffering people of Central America and throughout the world, but nothing happens in a vacuum.
Every dollar of the billions that will be spent for food, clothing, housing, education and health care for tens of thousands of children is one less dollar spent to feed Americans — while 1 in 6 Americans goes to bed hungry each night. It’s one less dollar spent on health care for our children, veterans, etc.
We rank 46th of the 48 countries with advanced economies, behind China, Cuba and Iran. It’s one less dollar spent on dilapidated schools with antiquated equipment and supplies. One less dollar spent to house homeless families, most of whom go bankrupt because of enormous medical bills.
Central America cannot solve its problems by transferring them to the United States, any more than we can solve our problems by transferring them to Canada.
