I ran for Atascadero City Council in the mid-1990s. There were 13 candidates on the ballot. It was an honor to obtain a seat then and three times thereafter.
The number of candidates during each election in Atascadero has declined. The low came during our last City Council election. Four candidates ran for three seats on the council.
The present council is made up of five members, all supported (funded) by the powerful political pack, A Better Atascadero.
In the 1980s, the Atascadero Home Owners Association had control of the council. Its no-growth stance cost our city dearly.

It’s not healthy for one group to control our council. You know what they say about complete power. Diversity is badly needed on our council.
Because of ABA dominance, Atascadero is missing some very talented people who could or should serve on the council. These citizens give and give of themselves every day to make Atascadero a better place. I call them our community angels.
