Bike riders’ rights

I am concerned with letters critical of bike riders in our community such as Mr. Negrete’s “Ban the Bikes” of Jan. 8.

Fortunately, he recognizes bike riders have rights. The California State Vehicle Code Section 21200 states, “A person riding a bicycle upon a highway has all the rights and is subject to all the provisions applicable to the driver of a vehicle.”

That includes riding a bike in the vehicle lane of all roads (not freeways) when it is unsafe to ride on the side. When a road, for example, has no bike lane, or the bike lane is blocked, drivers and riders have equal access to the road. Then a person driving a car is required to safely follow or safely pass a person riding a bike in the vehicle lane because the bike rider has all the rights of a driver. Road signs with an image of a bicycle that state “Share the Road” remind us of this.

Fortunately, the great majority of drivers in our communities are patient, kind and considerate toward the drivers of every vehicle on the road, including bikes, and find a way to drive safely that does not endanger anyone.
