Effort aids many

At the National Guard Armory in Atascadero on Dec. 18, volunteers distributed toys, food and coats to 373 families (1,550 people), including 779 children. The annual Atascadero Loaves and Fishes Christmas Project, in partnership with Toys for Tots/Kiwanis, Coats for Kids and Salvation Army, was completed. It had been an Atascadero community effort for three straight days, Dec. 16 to 18.

Our special thanks go out to the following groups: the armory military personnel, Grocery Outlet, Food 4 Less, Vons, Albertsons, Miner’s, Bay Laurel Nursery, the MOMS Club of Atascadero, Public Works, volunteer police officers, Waste Management, Escuela del Rio and Atascadero Unified School District and Montessori students. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the people who collected food through school drives, volunteering in front of markets, and putting collection barrels in their businesses. The food was moved by our wonderful transportation squad for storage and finally moved to the armory. Numerous students and volunteer groups finally sorted and boxed all the food.

Our final thanks go to all the people who opened their hearts and so generously donated items, making this project a success.
