In response to PG&E’s statements regarding the safety of spent nuclear waste, the company failed to mention that in June 2012, the U.S. Court of Appeals for Washington, D.C., overturned the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s rule that there was no significant environmental impact of storage of nuclear waste beyond the life of a nuclear power plant.
The court ruled that additional discussion was needed regarding “the impacts of failing to secure permanent disposal for spent nuclear fuel and concerning the impacts of certain aspects of potential spent fuel leaks and spent fuel pool fires.” As a result, there is now a moratorium on all licensing activities for nuclear plants.
However, the NRC is continuing its efforts to relicense Diablo Canyon. Attend the meeting Wednesday at the Courtyard Marriott in San Luis Obispo from 6 to 10 p.m., and email the NRC through Dec. 20 at firstname.lastname@example.org citing Docket ID No. NRC-2012-0246.
