Random thoughts

Random thought No. 1: All Western democracies have government-sponsored health plans and there is no movement in any of them to go back to the “good old days” of free private enterprise medicine. Yet there is a24/7 right-wing campaign to convince Americans that Obamacare means an end to our way of life and a fall into the pit of socialism.

Random thought No. 2: More than 3,000 people were killed on 9/11 — a horrible act and a tragic loss. But our “war” on terrorism must be viewed in perspective, and we must not let the terrorists (whose physical resources are limited) paralyze or goad us into counterproductive actions such as spying on friend and foe alike. That will do little to stop the enemy, and much to make us lose friends and influence.

Random thought No. 3: We have been top dog since World War II, but power centers are shifting, and having our way in international affairs will be much more difficult in the future.

Random thought No. 4: Obesity is a big problem these days. People are fat but not happy. Fat and happy was for times gone by when food was much more difficult to come by.
