I’ve reached my breaking point. It already seems as if San Luis Obispo has been organized for the benefit of people who don’t live here: from tourists, to students, to the hordes of camp followers trailing cycling tours and other such events. Now, according to Joe Tarica, we are also expected to turn our single-family neighborhoods into destinations for wandering tourists looking for cheap accommodations.
Half the homes on my block are already occupied by students. Should I now expect the rest to become vacation rentals for an endless stream of out-of-town visitors passing through?
San Luis Obispo is not a venue. It is my home. I’m happy to pay property and other taxes to live here as well as support those in this community with special needs. However, I am sick and tired of paying taxes to subsidize the promotion of the town for the enjoyment of others to the direct detriment of my lifestyle.
The first City Council member to embrace this vacation rental lunacy will engender my vigorous support for any candidate who will oppose them.
