In her March 20 letter, Jane Swanson continues her tedious tirade against nuclear power with an argument about danger in reprocessing spent fuel rods into new fuel.
Never explained by Ms. Swanson or her “expert” (and I’m certain unbiased) sources is how the French have successfully and safely and efficiently achieved nuclear recycling for the past 30 some years while deriving 80 percent of their carbon-free power from nuclear plants. The French waste is all stored safely in one room in the city of Le Havre.
President Ford’s loony rule that America will not reprocess spent fuel rods into fuel was made permanent by Jimmy Carter. This rule alone has cost untold billions and seriously compromises safety by resulting in dispersed storage of spent fuel that will be unsafe for a thousand years and more.
And, it takes very little research to learn that wind and sunshine or other alternative power cannot significantly replace carbon-based and nuclear power plants anytime soon. But, what the heck, why research? Why kill a beautiful fairy tale with ugly facts? Ideological faith is so much more comforting than reality.
