My husband and I are members of an organization called Plan International. They link Americans with children in other countries who need help. Recently they have come to realize how important education is for girls. It is well-documented that educating and empowering girls can break the circle of poverty. Investing in girls in developing countries creates a ripple effect that transforms families, communities and entire communities, and it can happen in one generation.
Plan International has created a program called “Because I Am A Girl.” In order to raise awareness and educate people about the transforming power of female education, they have produced a documentary that interviews 10 girls in 10 developing countries who have triumphed over tough obstacles to get an education. The film is narrated by Meryl Streep, Ann Hathaway and Selena Gomez. It will be shown on Wednesday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Regal Stadium No. 10 in Arroyo Grande, 1160 W. Branch St. This is an opportunity to meet incredible young women who have faced early marriage, trafficking, gender-based violence and even threat of death to achieve their goals
