With the eight-hour day and the 40-hour week guaranteed to workers through collective bargaining, workers began to have a shot at middle-class life. With hospitalization insurance policies and retirement benefits, workers began to have a healthier lifestyle.
These rights were secured through fair labor laws to the benefit of all American workers. Unions fought for rights that all workers now defend from erosion. Without the protection provided by these laws, all workers would suffer.
This Labor Day, let’s make sure we support our public employees who still enjoy labor union representation. Firefighters, law enforcement, nurses and teachers need our continued support. We are all in this together. When you see your children enjoying maternity leave and your grandchildren getting braces, thank the union members who helped make these dreams come true.
