Several weeks ago, when the Olympic Trials were being held at the University of Oregon, I criticized your sports editor for failing to credit the winner of the decathlon with a front-page story. The winner, Ashton Eaton, had established a new world record. Now, several weeks later following the completion of the Olympics, we learn that Ashton Eaton and second-place winner Trey Hardee are the two best athletes in the world. Both U.S. Olympians!
It’s encouraging to know, this time however, that your sports editor placed this story on the front page alongside stories about the amazing accomplishments of Jamaican Usain Bolt and our fabulous women’s soccer team’s win over Japan (Aug. 10). All three stories worthy of special recognition. I wish to acknowledge the sports editor for his educational leap forward and wise choice. Thank you!
