I just read Alex Beattie’s response (Aug. 13) to Mayor Janice Peters’ view on the placement of a new sewer plant in Morro Bay. I believe she and the past council and the current council live in another world. Consultants are their mentors, and whatever they say is gospel. One exception on the current council is Noah Smukler.
When Peters was mayor, she held meetings every Thursday. When the proposal came up to revise the retirement program for city employees, I went over to see her on several occasions. My issue with the proposal was it wasn’t sustainable to lower the age and increase the percentage for it. I explained to her that it was not sustainable and she should do a calculation to determine the difference.
Her response to me was, “We hire consultants to tell us what we should pay our employees.” Of course the consultants don’t have to pay for it, so their position will be to make the people who hired them happy.
I hope the new council and mayor-elect in Morro Bay will have the ability and guts to analyze what a consultant recommends and challenge it when necessary. I’m only sorry that they have to wait until December to take office.
