Bob Cuddy wrote an excellent column recently (July 14) about the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare.
Most people support the provisions of the act, such as more preventive care, not being turned down for insurance due to pre-existing conditions, tax incentives for small business, more competition between insurance companies, no lifetime limits on coverage and many others. But most people are also surprised to discover that’s what Obamacare is really all about: health insurance reform that’s long overdue.
So why the disconnect? I agree with Cuddy that the mass media has rarely discussed the details of this issue. Cable news mainly presents polarized, simplistic opinions to create controversy that keeps viewers watching.
Several years ago, I decided not to talk politics with anyone who doesn’t read a daily newspaper. Talking to cable news junkies is a total waste of time. All they know are the “talking points” on any issue, seldom the facts.

So thanks, Bob, for being just one of the excellent Tribune columnists who shed light on the important issues. I’d hate to see the day when The Tribune isn’t waiting for me each morning on the front steps.
