The 2012 SLO Triathlon brought the usual athletes from near and far to participate.
Napa’s Terra Pepper had the fastest women’s time, finishing in 1:16:09. But there is more to the story than that short entry in the record book.
It is true that Terra now calls Napa home, but she is a local woman whose family’s roots grow deep in San Luis Obispo soil.
Her grandfather, John Sweeney, came to San Luis Obispo as a small child and lived here for the next 81 2/ decades, until he retired and moved to Napa to be near his daughter, Kelly Pepper, née Kathleen Sweeney, who was born and reared here. Terra is her daughter and lived in San Luis Obispo for several years when she was growing up.

The magnetic draw of the triathlon has brought Terra’s mother, Kelly Pepper, a superb athlete herself, to participate in the triathlon each year for more than 15 years. And the daughter, son-in-law and grandson of her aunt Susan Sweeney Punches have been joining the friendly competition for the past seven years.
Terra’s tour de force is a family challenge.
