All people of faith are invited to stand with the sisters of “Nuns on the Bus” as they begin five days of prayer and discernment over their future. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, we will meet at Mission Plaza from 11:30 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. We will be there to acknowledge, support and encourage these nuns or religious women who took to heart the direction of the world’s Catholic bishops during Vatican II. They returned to their original desire to bring the teachings of Jesus to the world, and to use their gifts for people in the 20th and on into the 21st centuries.

These bright, giving women spent several years determining how they could best serve the people of God, regardless of where these people were: hospitals, schools, universities, soup kitchens, homes to house recovering women of the streets, death rows in prisons and all of the alleys and byways that most other people would never venture into. We want to thank them for taking the pro-life position of Vatican II to heart and making every effort to bring life to those who, for whatever reason, live in despair, and also to be a “voice for the voiceless.”

Please come and celebrate with us the good that these religious women do. Bring a homemade sign if you wish. We sincerely hope to see you there.

Letters to the editor: Reader’s opinions on American dream, health care

Reading most opinion and editorial pieces these days often leaves us little to find encouraging, says Gary Brennan of Arroyo Grande. The high percentage of Americans cited who still believe in the American dream is encouraging.
