I’m one of the minions whom Ann Romney views as “all you people” (in reference to what “people need to know” about Mitt Romney’s tax returns).
Yes, the Republican Party is perceived to be out of touch with Joe/Josephine average American. According to Forbes, Mitt is worth an estimated $230 million. Happening upon a fun little online calculator that would determine just how long it would take ol’ Mitt to earn what my family makes in a year (tinyurl.com/844norq), I discovered that in earning approximately $20 million per year, it takes Mitt a single day, plus 10 hours, 22 minutes and 28 seconds, to earn what my family lives on in a year. (And we’re lucky in that we bring in significantly more than the $45,000 an “average” American family makes in a year.)
Add to that, the grand pronouncement that Mitt so piously gives up 10 percent of his income to his church each year? Eighteen million dollars to live off annually? (Give or take a few million based on other contributions?) And his five sons who are part of a trust that is worth about $100 million dollars today? Oh, the struggle.
Mitt, in no way, represents average America.
