Regarding Mark Tomes’ letter “Obama over Greed” (July 15): It amazes me that some people feel that other people’s success from hard work, innovation, luck or whatever is greed and must be redistributed to everyone else. This socialistic approach by the “progressives” is one of the reasons we are in deep trouble today.
The idea that this is a zero-sum world, that every gain that is made by one person is at the expense of someone else, is absurd. When Bill Gates made billions with Microsoft, it wasn’t taken away from others. It was new wealth that helped create many jobs, new taxes and benefits to all.
It is proven that the top 10 percent pay about 70 percent of all income taxes, and that almost 50 percent pay no federal income tax. If you took the incentive away from people to work extra hard and risk everything to get rich, then you would destroy the capitalist system that has been the envy of the world and has come to the rescue of every other nation in the world.
If Mr. Tomes thinks the socialist redistribution policies of other failed countries are so great, maybe instead of trying to make America like them, he should move there, maybe to someplace like Greece.
