We have been sold the idea that we can cut taxes with no consequences — that indeed we should “starve the beast” that is the American system of governance. Good roads are overrated. Police and fire, do we need all of them and their pensions? And teachers, can’t we cut them?
Is this who we are?
My pre-Proposition 13 Sacramento high school taught four foreign languages, had real driver’s training, two swimming pools and great science labs. California roads, freeways and grade schools used to be the best. Could our schools get us to the moon today?
What are our children worth? We wave the flag, but what will we give to California, to America? What price for civilization?
