As I bicycled along the Morro Bay Embarcadero with more than 400 other proud, happy Fourth of July Americans, I wondered if riders and spectators were celebrating what I celebrate and were worried about my concerns. Along with all of the holiday fun and wearing of the red, white and blue, are they also thinking about “Government of the people, by the people, and for the people”? Those of us from Move to Amend are disturbed that money corrupts our electoral system. This flow of money has increased due to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision two years ago.
The McCain-Feingold Act was a bipartisan law to decrease the money corrupting our system. This is not a partisan issue. Americans of all political parties should be concerned about the incredible power that those with billions can wield in our elections. I believe in our system of government, but I think it’s time to pull our heads out of the sand and realize that “ of the people, by the people, and for the people” is not the current reality. Let’s get big money out of our electoral system.
