We would like to respond to a recent letter from George Lewis of Cayucos (“Park and parade,” June 25). We would like to correct several statements he made regarding the Cayucos Dog Park.
The dog park was built in May 2010 by a group of dedicated volunteers (both dog owners and non-dog owners) We were approached with the concept by an advisory council member. The county agreed to allocate a portion of the proposed Norma Rose Park for an off-leash dog park.
Volunteers raised more than $7,000 to build and fence the area. The current dog park is completely maintained by a small group of volunteers (not the county). An average of 15 to 20 dogs and owners use this park daily.
The chemical toilet is a county project and cannot be used until volunteers are found to maintain it. The skateboard park is still included in the county’s master plan for the future development of the Norma Rose Park.

We just celebrated two years of operation at the dog park. We hope visitors and locals will continue their support. Volunteers are always needed. Please see the dog memorial board at the park for contact numbers.
