Kevin Drabinski’s letter (June 18) about the holes in the road at Marsh and Higuera in San Luis Obispo was great fun. David Letterman often talks about a pothole in New York City so large that it has its own gift shop.
Behind the humor, however, is a serious problem. The San Luis Obispo Public Works Department, under the “leadership” of Jay Walter (whose salary/benefits package totals nearly a quarter-million dollars a year!), has shown itself, repeatedly, to be administratorheavy and performance-light. Don’t blame the workers; blame the leader.
I began to try more than three years ago to get this department to repair the numerous poorly patched ditches that have been cut into city streets. I’ve received mostly excuses and attacks on me.
I was promised over two years ago that the Marsh-Higuera fiasco would be remedied “in a few months.” Now, I’m told that it will “soon be put out to bid.”
