For the fifth year, friends and supporters of the Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter are preparing for our annual Needs ’N Wishes holiday fundraiser.
Sadly, we do so this year without our treasured friend, Victoria Hodson-Slothower, who died on Oct. 1.
Vicki and her husband, “Cap,” walked the walk, always involved and supporting the Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter and Prado Day Center. She and her family requested that donations in her name be made to the Vicki Hodson Memorial Fund, which includes the Maxine Lewis Memorial Shelter as a beneficiary. I can think of no better way to honor her than asking our community to support the Needs ’N Wishes holiday fundraiser.
This event on Dec. 11 is a countywide fundraiser with 100 percent of the benefits going to the shelter. The event is an old-fashioned Christmas bazaar with Santa, local choir groups and musicians, free coffee and cocoa, baked goods, the elf’s craft store, Santa’s toy store and, of course, the raffle and auction. Bring your change (and your Christmas spirit) as we’re filling five-gallon water jugs again this year.
We’re in need of items and gift certificates for the silent auction, raffle, gift store and gift certificate sale and all donations are tax deductible. Monetary contributions are also welcome as that will qualify us for matching funds. For more information, call 528-5800.
Up until last December, Vicki and I would traipse about San Luis Obispo in search of donations. She was fearless, charismatic, captivating and charming, even as she was suffering with her illness. As I travel solo this season with letters, the resolve and encouragement of Vicki keep me going.
