Letters to the Editor

Speech fetishists

In his response (“Guns facilitate killing,” letters, Oct. 9) to Andrew Kenny’s letter (“Communication is key,” letters, Oct. 4) expressing ideas on reducing gun violence, Michael Miller characterized Second Amendment supporters as “fetishists.”

Should Mr. Miller freely exercising his First Amendment rights also be considered a fetishist?

Using unfair and inaccurate characterization immediately debases the conversation and pretty much eliminates the chance for intelligent debate.

It is, to use Mr. Miller’s own words, “Not. Helpful.”

Our great country is facing many challenges, and applying a dose of hyperbole won’t solve these.

We need to have intellectually honest conversations to learn from one another, test theories, achieve consensus and move forward.
