Heartfelt thanks go to Vic and Carol Ascrizzi of San Luis Obispo for bringing two of the most enthralling young operatic singers I’ve heard in a long time to the Central Coast.
John Viscardi, lyric baritone, and Anush Avetisyan, lyric soprano, were presented in recital at the lovely Varian Ranch home of Sharon and Dennis Schneider on Sept. 13.
The striking beauty and perfection of the voices and the heavenly resonant setting of the Schneider home made for an unforgettable concert.
Accompanied by Cal Poly music professor and Central Coast music treasure Susan Davies, the consummate artists sang arias and duets from the operas “Barber of Seville,” “Gianni Schicchi,” “Le Villi,” “La Boheme,” “West Side Story” and “Don Giovanni.”

In addition, Anush and John’s Nedda and Silvio duet from “Pagliacci” by Ruggero Leoncavallo was especially touching, as Opera San Luis Obispo will present John Viscardi as Silvio in his debut with Opera SLO, when the company performs “Pagliacci” on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 11 at 2 p.m.
The Ascrizzis and Schneiders generously donated proceeds from the recital to Opera San Luis Obispo.
Thank you for this soulsatisfying gift!
