On Sept. 6, we attended the Labor Day Pops concert by Orchestra Novo. A capacity crowd filled the Alex Madonna Expo Center to be entertained with classical, modern and popular music.
Without the accoutrements and acoustics of a concert hall or the expansive beauty of the Avila Beach setting of pops concerts from years past, this orchestra delivered its core product. A product we could not touch but felt deeply the emotions created by 65 musicians working in well-rehearsed concert.
We could not hold it but took away warm memories of the warm, brash, soft, happy, sad, upbeat, slow and otherwise nuance of sounds created by this talented group that clearly enjoyed creating them.
In this unlikely setting, Michael Nowak, Inga Swearingen and the other musicians — in an ambitious program put together and perfected in a very short time — displayed the essence of quality music-making. The audience was appreciative, and all had a good time.
