I read the recent article highlighting the high incidence of bicycle-related accidents in San Luis Obispo (“More riders on roads means more in the ER,” Aug. 8).
Although I realize the problem, like many, is multi-faceted, one interesting new addition is the painting of the bike lanes on Santa Rosa Street in San Luis Obispo.
I have no idea what the statistics are for other areas/cities where this has been used, but it just seems to make intuitive sense.
The more you highlight a boundary and clarify the space, the more likely cars and bikes will stay in their proper lanes.
Definitely not the “cure-all,” but a great idea by whoever thought of it. Seems like a low-cost way to continue to remind both modes of transportation of what the “line” is.
