As an avid cyclist, I read with interest the article on bicycle safety (“More riders on roads means more in the ER,” Aug. 8).
I would be interested in seeing a breakdown by age of the number of bikerelated injuries requiring an emergency room visit.
I am keenly aware of the many bicycle safety violations that occur in and around San Luis Obispo, including riding on sidewalks, riding against traffic and running stop signs and red lights.
In particular, I’ve observed that many of these violations occur in the vicinity of Cal Poly and involve college-age kids. So many of these kids are not wearing helmets!
How about including basic bicycle safety instruction as part of freshman orientation.
