The Republican hypocrisy meter is spiking as the pathetic spectacle starring Donald Trump continues to spew nationwide. Republicans are outraged over his vile, hateful comments about women, veterans and minorities — outrage absent when similar sentiments are uttered by others of their ilk.
Trump represents the natural evolution of the politics of personal destruction that Republicans invented and mastered over 30 years. He is their creation, their creature, a perfect reflection of what they’ve become.
Since 2009, the Republican party and its allies (Fox News) have unleashed a torrent of hateful commentary, slanderous lies and deliberate obstruction. Their objective: to undermine the ability of the twice-elected president of the United States to do his job. However, in achieving their possibly treasonous, near-term political goals, they are rendering the nation ungovernable. While endlessly proclaiming themselves true patriots, they have willfully created a mortal threat greater than any we’ve faced since the Civil War (not coincidentally started by the modern Republicans’ direct philosophical ancestors). Democracy is fragile when not all are committed to it.
Donald Trump is the disease Republicans deservedly contracted for their despicable, reckless behavior. Sadly, though, he represents a potentially incurable tumor on the body politic for which we all will suffer.
