At age 93, I have a lot of memories -— though I may forget the year each occurred.
I remember droughts and storms.
I remember the two times Laguna Lake was dry before and I remember when, after a storm, my friends on Oceanaire Drive in San Luis Obispo had 4 feet of floodwater in their houses.
I also remember having lunch with Alex Madonna.
He had offered his services to dredge Laguna Lake at his own expense, but the city council turned him down.
Some say the refusal was a concern for the fish in the lake —- I don’t think the fish are better off today.
Some may say the refusal by city council members was because they didn’t want him to profit from the topsoil he would collect.
As the comic strip character Pogo said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
