I have never before voiced my opinion on any subject; however, I am deeply disturbed by plans to move the 5-acre Leaning Pine Arboretum on the Cal Poly campus.
This garden is a wonder that is worth keeping. To think that all the mature trees, hedges and succulents can survive a move is unlikely. While I realize the university needs additional housing, it also needs to utilize the arboretum to maximize its role in educating current and future students.
If better promoted, the arboretum could also play a more important role in educating citizens on drought-tolerant plant options and maybe even generate some additional revenue for the university. The current campus is so large that it’s hard to imagine a more appropriate option (one that allows the arboretum to stay) cannot be found.
