I read the article “Smart guns” (Insight, July 17) and thought, what the heck are they thinking? What about all the guns already out there?
This may be a distant future solution, but not for today’s flood of gun problems.
Longer and deeper background checks (90-day minimum), mental evaluation testing, three months of safety training.
These measures would slow a radical or mental patient from getting their hands on guns.

In order for smart guns to have any effect, we would have to get all other nonsmart guns off the streets. I don’t see that happening any time in the near future.
I am a firm believer in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, but keeping guns out of the hands of the wrong people is paramount if we want to stop mass and daily shootings across the U.S.
