As a retired police officer, I am writing with a challenge to my fellow active and retired law enforcement personnel in San Luis Obispo County. Cancel your membership in the National Rifle Association (NRA). It is no great surprise that the NRA is not our friend. Historically, they opposed a ban on Teflon-coated bullets that can penetrate officers’ protective body armor. They have steadfastly opposed any type of ban on “assault rifles,” the same rifles that have been used to kill police officers and many civilians in communities all over this nation.
Now, after the latest mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, the NRA leader has lashed out at law enforcement, blaming us (among others) for the shooting. NRA leadership has demonstrated that they do not care that we place our lives on the line, running toward gunfire to protect innocent people. They demonstrated they do not care about the human carnage that is taking place and the physical, emotional and financial toll these incidents create for our communities and all first responders.
The NRA does not have your back. It is time to cancel your membership.
