Test scores ‘mostly positive’? Not!

How nice to hear that area schools’ test results are “mostly positive” (“Test results are in...,” Sept. 29). That is, until I looked at the numbers. Yikes! The so-called improvement took the test scores from amazingly bad to (only) terrible. Most of the students are not proficient in math, and almost half don’t make the grade in English. In my district (Coast Union), three-quarters of the kids can’t do math at grade level.

I don’t find anything positive here. By any measure, government schools are not educating most of their students. Is this the new normal? Isn’t it time to try something different?
