In his “Over the Hill” column (June 27), Phil Dirkx comments on the good news of the second performance by Garth Brooks. But even better news to Mr. Dirkx is the fact that the Mid-State Fair will be “a no-smoking event” this year, and that “the present rules dictate no smoking of anything.”
Mr. Dirkx displays a not-uncommon, irrational optimism when it comes to cigarette smoke; a belief that the absence of cigarette smoke means the absence of smoke. I am sure there will be just as much smoke at the Mid-State Fair as there is at other county venues which prohibit cigarette smoke but turn a blind eye (or sick lung) to wood smoke.
