Cal Fire responded to a 17-acre vegetation fire in the area of Christmas Cove at Lake Nacimiento on Saturday, September 23, 2017.

A vegetation fire scorched around 17 acres in the area of Christmas Cove on the west end of Lake Nacimiento on Saturday afternoon before firefighters were able to gain control of the blaze, Cal Fire said.

It was first reported at 3:45 p.m. after it had burned approximately 10 acres. Air tankers and a helicopter assisted crews on the ground to stop forward progress within three hours, Cal Fire said.

Cal Fire spokesman Chris Elms said crews would have “quite a bit of work to do” through the night to mop up dead material and put out hot spots. No evacuations were necessary and no structures were threatened, Elms said.

Crews were expected to remain at the scene through the night.
