Uber will offer free rides to Santa Barbara County residents in mandatory evacuation areas, the company announced Thursday.

The company will offer rides to and from the Red Cross evacuation shelter set up at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office issued storm-related mandatory evacuation orders Thursday for people in communities below the Thomas, Sherpa and Whittier fire burn areas, saying people must be out of those areas by 6 p.m.

To request a free ride, evacuees should enter the promo code STAYSAFE18 in the “Payment” section of the Uber app, located under “Promotions.” The offer is good for one trip worth up to $40 using UberX and UberXL, the company said in a news release.

The offer is valid through Sunday, March 4. The Earl Warren Showgrounds are at 3400 Calle Real in Santa Barbara.
