As a 10-month effort to upgrade portions of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk draws closer to completion, the theme park has released new details about two new rides planned for the park.
Moving in next to the Boardwalk’s Undertow roller coaster, the new Shockwave will rise 65 feet in the air atop an expanded upper deck overlooking the main entrance. The ride, known in the amusement industry as mega disk’o, will feature 24 “motorcycle-style” seats arranged around a large disc. The ride’s disc will spin while rocking riders back and forth on a curling, wave-shaped track, according to a park release. The attraction is manufactured by the Italian company Zamperla.
Just inside the entrance, the 60-foot Typhoon, manufactured by Ohio-based A.R.M. Inc., will swing riders upside down on two spinning arms. The attraction will be similar to a former ride of the same name, removed in 2009 in favor of the Sea Swings.
The new rides are part of a $14 million Boardwalk project that will also make over the park’s central entrance near Neptune’s Kingdom and upgrade several buildings, including the home to the Fright Walk. The spooky walk-through attraction will expand and move under the Boardwalk. The Laser Maze will also expand, adding a second vault and new themes.
Renovation plans also include the addition of a Cruzin’ Crepes food stand, featuring made-to-order crepes and a new and expanded birthday party room.
The park’s entrance will be expanded to include more ticket windows, with digital signage distinguishing between season pass members, groups, general sales and information. Paso Robles-based Daniels Wood Land Inc. is developing the Boardwalk’s new exterior design and game and ride themes at the main entrance. The company was featured on the Animal Planet TV show “Redwood Kings.” Midway games Ring Toss and Pitch In will be added.
