State Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian is expected to announce Friday that he will run for Lois Capps' 24th Congressional District seat in 2016.
According to a news release, Achadjian will launch his campaign for the House of Representatives at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse in Santa Barbara at 11 a.m..
Capps has represented San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, as well as parts of Ventura County, since 1997. She announced last week that she would be retiring at the end of the current session of Congress, prompting speculation on who else might step forward now that an open seat makes the race more competitive.
Achadjian, a Republican, represents San Luis Obispo and part of Santa Barbara County in the state Assembly, where he will reach term limits in 2016.

Other official contenders for the seat include San Luis Obispo farmer Bill Ostrander, Santa Barbara County Supervisor Salud Carbajal and Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider — all Democrats — and 2014 Republican candidate Justin Fareed.
Capps' daughter, Laura Capps, has also been rumored to be considering a bid.
