Atascadero Unified School District Trustee Tami Gunther has announced that she has withdrawn from the 5th District supervisor race and plans to support candidate Eric Michielssen.
Gunther, who has served nine years on the school board, had filed paperwork allowing her to raise money for the supervisor seat. She said she plans instead to work as campaign manager for Michielssen, a Pozo organic farmer who recently announced plans to challenge Supervisor Debbie Arnold for election in 2016.
Michielssen told The Tribune he decided to run for the 5th District seat — which represents Atascadero, California Valley, Creston, Garden Farms and Santa Margarita, as well as portions of Cal Poly, Pozo, San Luis Obispo and Templeton — at the urging of friends and community members.
Gunther said she was compelled to join Michielssen’s team after meeting him and said he will bring “a nonpartisan, balanced viewpoint to the decisions facing our Board of Supervisors, along with a genuine concern for the safety and well being of our community.”

Of her decision, Gunther, who also serves as a director for the California School Boards Association, said she would not be able to continue advocating for local schools and also run for supervisor.
