Cal Poly band to march in San Francisco parade

Cal Poly’s Mustang Marching Band will strut its stuff in San Francisco next month.

The band is one of only two university bands invited to participate in the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year Parade on Feb. 15. Also performing is UC Davis’ Cal Aggie Marching Band.

Directed by Cal Poly’s associate director of bands, Christopher Woodruff, the Mustang Marching Band has more than 200 members and performs at more than 40 campus events each year.

Established in the 1860s by the Chinese community of San Francisco, the Chinese New Year Parade celebrates the lunar new year and Asian culture.

This year’s festivities will welcome the Chinese zodiac’s “Year of the Horse” with floats, fireworks, dancers and appearances by the newly crowned Miss Chinatown U.S.A. and her court.
