Paso Robles school district to recommend staff layoffs Tuesday

While the Paso Robles school district has dug itself out of a financial hole, it intends to recommend layoffs to classified staff during Tuesday’s school board meeting, according to the board’s agenda.

Because of lack of funds, lack of work and declining enrollment, the district will recommend the board cut the equivalent of 15 full-time positions, including instructional assistants and a bilingual translator, according to a report by Ruben Canales, director of human resources.

Some positions will be eliminated; others will be reduced in hours.

The board is expected to vote on the recommendation during a special meeting beginning at 5 p.m. at district administration office, 800 Niblick Road in Paso Robles.

The district recently built its reserves from less than a percent to more than 5 percent, largely with cuts to staff and reduced school days.
