Meeting on request to allow Cayucos teens to attend Morro Bay High is Wednesday

A county committee is expected to receive a report Wednesday, Sept. 19, on a request to have Cayucos high school students permanently assigned to San Luis Coastal Unified School District. Such a move would allow the students to attend a closer campus, Morro Bay High School.

Cayucos high schoolers have for more than 80 years been part of Coast Unified School District, based in Cambria, and have attended Coast Union High School.

A consultant is expected to present his report on potential financial, demographic and other impacts of such a transfer. The committee could act on the report immediately, or defer a decision to a later meeting. The committee has until December to make a decision. Ultimately, voters would have to approve any committee decision.

Coast Unified officials have said the transfer, if approved, would result in the loss of $1.2 million in property-tax funding, 11.4 percent of the district’s total annual budget.

The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education County Committee on School District Organization meets at 4:30 p.m. in Rancho El Chorro Auditorium, 3350 Education Drive. For details, call 782-7201.
